FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General Questions that apply to Workshops, Immersions and Certifications

How long is each program and what are the schedules like?

All programs vary in length. I f you have a specific question about a program, please contact us.

What style of Yoga and lineage does each training follow?

All training follows Hatha Yoga based teachings, with extensive Buddhist meditation traditions. Chantel Ehler, the Lead Faculty, is from the Kripalu and Moksha lineage, and the Amara Vidya School honors both as its roots.

Amara Vidya also seeks to incorporate emerging research and pan-cultural influences based on respecting each individual’s sociocultural background and experiences.

Amara Vidya philosophy is designed to be compatible with any lineage, and encourages all community members to respect the path of each.

Who is on the faculty for Amara Vidya Yoga School?

Our Lead Team of trainers and Mentors are all Yoga Alliance Certified, and bring a variety of experience and perspective to ensure your growth is fostered appropriately. For more information on our teacher-training faculty, please visit our Faculty and Mentor page.
We chose faculty specifically to represent key aspects of the Amara Vidya philosophy and content. You can see our current list of faculty here.

Why am I learning from so many different teachers?

This is a great question that has two answers. The first is, Chantel can train you in all of the content, which is good for those who are unable to attend the requested dates. The second is, in her experience Chantel knows that not everyone learns in the same way, and just like in College or University, you can benefit from learning content from a variety of teachers. Many yoga schools pay for presenters to come in and lecture for 30 minutes to an hour about a topic and charge big bucks. Instead, we provide content that you can access directly online at a cheaper cost to you, without having to fly you (and the presenter) to some exotic locale at a set date. We also respect what these specific teachers do, and consider them as Faculty of the school. We promote their work, and celebrate what they offer the world.

How many students are accepted into Amara Vidya programs?

At present, we are dedicated to a very limited number of student enrollment and do not anticipate expanding it in the future. The 200 hour and 1000 (with 500 Yoga Alliance) hour programs will have a cap of registrants. We do have a wait list for anyone who has already registered.

The maximum capacity for any other program has a set range of students that is program dependent as per instructor requirements, and will not exceed that number. A wait list is not guaranteed once capacity is reached.

How do I register and get accepted into programs?

We offer a variety of programming, and you can learn a little bit more about each offering in our Programs Offered section, or view our courses right on the registration page.

Register here.

You will know you are fully registered as soon as you receive a letter of acceptance via email.

How much time should I expect to spend on preparation and assignments?

For workshops and Immersions, we ask that participants carefully read the application process to ensure that they attend fully prepared to engage with the course materials.

In certification training programs, we have required reading, prerequisite preparation, and online content that can either be done prior to course commencement or in conjunction with the training. *Please note: for Yoga Teacher training certification, we ask that the attendee has (or is prepared to intensively study) anatomy. As proponents of Functional movement, we provide current research in biomechanics and options that assume knowledge already. We don’t want a participant feeling overwhelmed, hence, they must prepare in advance, or be aware that they must spend a significant amount of time in distance learning. We integrate teachers into concentrated study times that may use advanced jargon, and will not wait for an inadequately prepared student.

The design of both yoga certification training (the 200 and 1000 hour)  ensures you can perform a lot of the prerequisites, required reading, and course work at your own pace. We permit extensions for those who have a hectic work-life balance to maintain.

We also don’t pressure anyone to certify, and those who take the 200 hour training can do this more for a personal enrichment.

We make sure that the 1000 hour (500 hour Yoga Alliance) certification gives enough latitude for participants to take the time they need  and/or take a concentrated intensive opportunity to advance their skill set.

What happens if I miss a class?

100% full attendance is mandatory. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis. If granted permission, we make a special arrangement for a missed class. Please ensure that any such requests arising from scheduling conflicts are communicated in writing to Amara Vidya prior to the training, so that we can discuss whether a special arrangement will be possible.

There may be an additional charge for such arrangement (for example, private sessions are charged at $100/hour and the cost may be shared by others if they missed the same class).

What payment plans are available?

Upon receiving your “Confirmation of Acceptance” email, you have 2 options:
a) to pay in full, guaranteeing your spot in the program
b) pay by installment plan leading up to the commencement of the program.

A lot!

The program also offers a solid grounding in functional movement, meditation, history and applications toward accessible practices for everyone. We also include prerequisite courses that instruct you on anatomy, and offer built in certifications from either Dianne Bondy or Jivana Heyman.

What happens after I graduate from Amara Vidya 200 hour program?

Upon successful completion of our 200 hour program, you will have more training than any other school currently out there. Not only do re require a comprehensive anatomy prerequisite that is unavailable in many other Yoga Schools at this level,  we ensure you have a grounded Foundation and Accessible training that is typically considered a post-graduate course for many 500 level teachers. Many will feel adequately prepared to teach a beginner’s yoga or adaptive yoga class immediately following the yoga training.

Graduates of the 200 hour program usually begin teaching in their workplace and with friends and family. Your ability to teach will also be influenced by how long you have been practicing yoga, your dedication to your practice in combination with the program, and your comfort level with teaching.

At Amara Vidya Yoga School we continue to support our graduates offer employment representation and extended community support programming. There are also volunteer assisting opportunities at various events
and programs Amara Vidya Yoga School is involved in.

1000 (500) hour graduates gain access to extensive Business of Yoga support programming, ongoing career resource development, and opportunities for coaching. We have a group of strong mentors, dedicated to growing together and a part of a larger global community with organizations Amara Vidya actively supports. A graduate has the opportunity to teach in the School as a mentor or represent the School in another career capacity.

Does it matter if I am not Yoga Alliance certified to teach?
Many do. This is an unregulated practice that has limited standards. Some programs offer weekend training, and very little content, and pump people out into the world with little preparation. We strongly recommend that our graduates do not teach until they have had adequate preparation, however, some people just want to teach to their friends and family. We also say “Whatever floats your boat!”…. this is why we made sure our 200 hour trainees receive a minimum level of training that actually exceeds the 200 hour minimum.
Can I upgrade from the 200 certification tot he full 1000 hour certification?
Yes!
Can I teach after I graduate?
You can, and with Jivana Heyman’s Accessibility training, you will be more qualified to teach to a wider audience than most graduates at the same level. We strongly recommend that thosewho are not professionals or healthcare practitioners continue on with training to give them time to formulate a better teaching practice. Most professionals already have n idea of how to integrate yoga into their workplace, and are seeking a certification to give them access to teaching in their workplace. Some professionals may choose to take some of the additional courses, and are able to progress quickly through the 1000 hour certification. For those new to teaching or not looking to put it into a workplace practice, we strongly recommend you take the 200 hour program as a personal practice experience.

1000 hr Yoga Teacher Training

Why do I need a 500 hour certification to teach?
Some people believe you don’t, they want to tell you 200 is enough. We have yet to meet someone who has left a 200 hour training and felt they were truly prepared and qualified to lead group or private classes. Most feel wholly inadequate, which manifests in very unhealthy ways, or, motivates a graduate to immediately sign up for more training. Suddenly, teachers at the 200 hour level are trapped in a vicious, never ending cycle of feeling inadequate and “not up to par”.
We want to change that. We are taking time with our teachers to produce strong, fully realized teachers who now how to teach to the student in their community. Now Chantel’s approach to a random student. Not Jivana’s approach to a random student. Not Dianne’s, Carol’s, Matthew’s, Katie’s, Ray’s, Carolyn’s, Teresa’s approach to a random student. But the graduate can grow strong in their community and know who is showing up on the mat and what to nurture in the practice.
This is actually another reason why we promote distance learning. We want to have a teacher growing in their own backyard, aware of who can connect to their service; not isolating trainees in a far away land in an alien environment that looks nothing like their community. We want to say: there is NOTHING wrong with training wile on vacation and exploring other cultures. The problem is the training can’t be contained only in one place. This is why we advocate only small portions of live contact in person training sessions.
I’m confused with 500 hour yoga alliance certification, 1000 hour Amara Vidya certification. What does it all mean?
We get it! Why not just get the 500, right? Here are some of the reasons why, in brief, we package our full 1000 hour with a built in 500 certification:
  • Some people coming into the course are already certified or have specialized training in areas and receive advanced standing (eg: someone who has a 200 hour ytt, someone who already has a Restorative yoga certification, someone who is a healthcare practitioner like a Massage Therapist and already has anatomy background). Our core value is to honor and respect the trainee’s experience, and not force them to reinvent the wheel. As a bonus, their cost is reduced based on what they’ve already achieved.
  • The Yoga Alliance Certification simply does not provide a comprehensive enough program that really prepares a teacher. That organization is also in a period of massive change, and we are exceeding their current requirements to make sure our graduates don’t fall behind in any shift the organization takes.
  • We build in YACEP  (Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Program) credits. That is in addition to the 500 hour. So when you graduate, you are well on your way to earning an E-RYT 200 level credential, which would grant you the opportunity to run workshops that offer YACEP credits and train others. It is a core value of ours to ensure we produce QUALITY teachers, not a glut of low skilled teachers.
  • We have a unique programs that ensure you get the right mentorship and spend time developing into the type of teacher you want to be. We don’t believe in making you become a carbon copy of us. This is why we have a significant allocation of hours devoted to Independent Study.
Do I have to register with yoga alliance? Do I have to register after?
If you do not agree with joining Yoga Alliance, you certainly do not have to. We offer it as an option. The reason being is it can open doors to job placement opportunities globally. Not everyone has heard of Amara Vidya, but many know of Yoga Alliance. Offering this gives you access. We don’t want to stifle or deny job opportunities.
What is advanced placement and how do I qualify?
Advanced placement is proving existing experience or qualifications in training. This can be a very specific, structured concept, or it can be fluid depending on your background.
The best way to explain this is with three applicant examples, who we will name Peter, Paul and Mary.
Peter is a Registered Massage Therapist. He has practiced yoga on and off for years, but recently he’s noticed the benefit of using it in clinical practice. He applies to the program, and is immediately granted automatic entry because he has the equivalent of our prerequisite requirements of anatomy and biomechanics. He also has a specific goal, therefore he has access to Independent study projects that will be completed rapidly. The only thing that is missing is learning the deeper roots of yoga, and spending time learning how to apply techniques in a clinical setting. Already he is a Yoga Therapist, because he is a licensed healthcare practitioner, who is using yoga in a wellness treatment plan model, as per his license requirements.
Paul is a 200 hour certified teacher and has taught yoga for  years. He recently took Leslie Kaminoff’s Yoga Anatomy online course, and completed a Yin training. He thought of taking another yoga teacher training program, however most of the programs are forcing him to retake material where he’s already feeling competent. He applies to the program, and already he exceeds not just prerequisite requirements, but is exempt from the Yin training, and is credited some of his existing training and experience toward his 1000 hours. Upon completion of the live training August 25th, he already has most of his portfolio completed. He books his mentorship, integration practicum and portfolio submission to coincide with Labor Day weekedn. By September 1st, he has graduated with 1000 hours from Amara Vidya.
Mary is new to yoga. She has practiced various styles on and off for several years. She recently contemplated training in Ashtanga yoga, but the courses are far away and very expensive. She is a single mother and her busy work as an Education Assistant means she can only take times off at certain periods. She wants to take our program, but June is a very tricky time for her to leave work for the Accessible Yoga Conference. She manages to negotiate special leave, because the Accessible Yoga Conference offers credits, including a presentation from Sherry LeBlanc “Yoga for the Special Child” that is work related. She attends both Live sessions in Toronto and in July, however in August she has a traditional family get together in the Maritimes that she and her daughter missed two years in a row and this year her parents bought flights. She negotiates to take some of the training using our *livewebconnect video conferencing while in Nova Scotia, and negotiates to make up hours with Chantel later on. Her job is demanding during the fall, so Mary requests an extension until March of 2019 to complete the training. By Spring Break of 2019, Mary has completed all components and submits her Portfolio. She graduates and has built a small private practice in her home, teaching to special needs and a drop in group class on the weekends.
How proficient in yoga do I have to be to participate in the YTT (training) program?

We believe yoga is for everybody and we accept students at many ages and levels of ability. We review your application during the interview and offer an entrance examination to evaluate your compatibility.

For the 1000 hour (500hr Yoga Alliance) Yoga Teacher Training Certification, we highly recommend that a participant has a minimum of 6 months- 1 year of yoga from any style or lineage prior to commencement of this comprehensive program. We ideally recommend that an applicant has 3-5 years of experience prior to commencement.

How long is each program and what are the schedules like?
